God Is Not A Vending Machine

“As I often tell audiences when I speak to churches and other Christian groups, God is not a vending machine.  We don't get to put in a dollar and punch a button to pop out the perfect spouse, or the ideal job, or a spacious home.  There are also no buttons that we can push to take away our problems—to instantly smooth over marital difficulties, eliminate job stress, make our kids behave better, or get rid of cerebral palsy.  I am so grateful that Jesus Christ died to make things right between God and me.  But to believe that his sacrifice leads to anything other than my reconciliation with God is to make a mockery of the cross.

-God Is Not A Vending Machine

I spent fifteen years accumulating the material for this book, and then I wrote it in three weeks.  It’s a book that I needed to write, perhaps even more than others need to read.  Putting these words to paper has brought me an unexpected measure of grace, a renewed assurance that Jesus loves me, warts and all.

We view cultures that offer human sacrifices as barbaric.  The thought of a God-sacrifice, at least to my way of thinking, is incomprehensible.  Yet, that’s the measure of love that God demonstrated by mounting a cross!  How fortunate we are to have a God who was willing to die in order that we might live!

Pfft. Our culture doesn't view human sacrifice as barbaric. We accept all kinds as long as they aren't of the obvious cultic nature.

Anyway, way to go on finishing your second book! That's great. Thank you so much for a copy. I feel special. =)

You wrote the entire book in 3 weeks? It's clear that you were writing this book in your head for many years and already knew exactly what you wanted to say once you got to your computer. I love the excerpt and I'm looking forward to reading the full book.

The embattled gates to equal rights indeed opened up for modern women, but I sometimes think to myself; that is not what I meant by freedom, it is only social progress.
