God and Irish Beer

As one who seldom imbibes, I never imagined myself reading abook about the history of beer.  Yet,little did I know of the importance on this drink within the history ofsocieties but also within the history of the church.  Beer not only served as the answer to diseaseinfested water, it was also promoted to temper the use of hard liquor.  Stephen Mansfield, in his book, The Search for God and Guinness, documents the history of beer making and, more specifically, chronicles thebirth and growth the Guinness beer of Irelandand the remarkable family behind the name. If the manufacturing of beer was the only thing the Guinness family isknown for, this book would still be a very interesting read.  However, what began as a small enterprise inthe 1700s has grown to impact everything from worker’s living conditions toevangelistic movement to the far corners of the world.  This is a fast-reading book filled with allsorts of interesting stories.

We will be surprised to find a lot of similar stories which we think were totally unrelated!! Or who else will associate Irish beer with God?? But as rightly said it makes very interesting reading and a lot of food for thought! Its really mind boggling to read that Guinness Beer for such a long time and still growing from strength to strength maintaining their rich tradition! Must tray and get my hands Stephen Mansfield's book!

I haven't taken the time to read the book 'The Search for God and Guinness' yet. However, I have been thinking about it...and may do it soon. I am planning on brewing my own beer at home soon, and I have been reading blogs and watching how-to videos online a lot lately. Guinness is one of my favorite beers, and I also have a BA in Biblical Studies...haha! Right now, I'm drinking a Clay County Coffee Stout (brewed in Brazil, IN) and it is really good!
